My review of Mayhemfest in Va Beach
August 2, 2008Mayhemfest in Va Beach was quite an eventful experience. I was one of the fortunate few who got the opportunity to work for DJ Starscream.
I arrived at the VWVBA yesterday at 9 am to meet up with Starscream's manager to work. We were told things were running behind schedule, to hang out until 10. Once again things were still backed up so we were asked to convene neat Starscream's bus. Once there, I met Pudntane, her husband Keith and a few other maggots whose names I can't recall. Evan arrived and we went over what all we'd be doing.
At roughly 1, we began to setup Starscream's stage. My wife, Pudntane and my brother in law set up the merchandise booth. As all this was going on, the guy directing us on where to put things was none other than Izzy Dunfore. After some minor confusion, we got the merchandise set up along with the guys from Metal Mulisha. We were seeing just how much detail goes into a show for the crews.
Time seemed to fly by and before you know it, Metal Mulisha began their motocross show doing aerial stunts over Starscream's bus. A little bit into it, Starscream began spinning his records. It was incredible being able to be a part of the whole thing.
After realising it was already 4, we went over to the Machine Head sig booth. Those guys were really cool. After the sigs, some quick pix and being given a guitar pick, we went back to work. I hate to say it, but i never really watched any of the bands on the second or third stages as working was a blast!
As we got ready for round two of Metal Mulisha and Starscream, Clown came over to check things out. I would like to thank him for signing my Mayhemfest booklet and for briefly talking to me! Can you say Holy Shit?????
The motocross started again and before you now the aerial assault was on.
Shane from Metal Mulisha quickly took a liking to us and thanked us for helping sell their merchandise along with Starscream's vinyls and Izzy's cd. This later proved to be a great thing.
Sid did his last show for the day, then did a signing for folks. Once he finished with the fans, he took care of those of us who worked. Again I apologize for forgetting names, but one young lady gave him a Starscream figure. Sid definitely loved it. I got Sid to sign my booklet, then he posed for a picture with me and the license plate. Thanks Sid,Evan and Jojo for giving me this opportunity!!!!
Breakdown began and severall people disappeared. Shane invited us over to the MM bus for some Jager shots and beers. After a shot, we returned and finished breaking everything down. Izzy gave me a personalized signed cd and posed for pix. What an awesome guy who has my utmost respect and gratitude!!!!
As i went to put some stuff in the car, Clown and Corey went by on a golfcart. I ran toward them holding the licencse plate up. The cart stopped and one of the security staff filmed the plate as I got closer. Corey signed it and Clowned just laughed and smiled. All of this happened to me because I was lucky enough to have worked for SID!!! Thanks Corey,Sid and Clown!!!! While there were no meet and greets, I still got your sigs. What a great time so far!
Finally everything was put away, so we headed to the main stage. Disturbed was going on so we had missed Mastodon,DragonForce and others. Draiman scowled at the crowd and began to work them up. While I' m not a huge Disturbed fan, I have to give them credit for a great performance. Then it was time for the feature!
Iowa began to play and the crowd's electricity began to buzz. The curtains drew back and there was Joey enciting the crowd from behind his kit. Members appeared onstage until there were 8. Moments later Corey appeared and lit into a blistering rendition of Surfacing. It Was On!!!! As note after note was played, it was hard to believe the Knot had been on hiatus for nearly 3 years. The Blister Exists began and there was no question as to who the best band in the world is. Slipknot is the epitome bar none!!!! Corey told the crowd about Sid's ankle's and called him pennyracer to which everyone laughed. The band ripped through Duality,Get This , The Heretic Anthem, Psychosocial, People=Shit and countless others. You all have read the past set list and they followed it. Words can't describer the sheer insanity that was transpiring on the stage. For those of you that have seen SK, you know what I mean. Those that will be seeing them for the first time, you'll understand shortly. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, the show was over. Fucking incredible is all I can say!!!
Now for the disappointing part. Where were all you maggots that said you were going to the show? Other than the few I mentioned earlier, the only ones I met were Primal Scream and his wife Kelly6sicsix. I wore my OT9 shirt all day and nobody introd themselves while I was working for Sid. In fact, not many of you came by his booth. I cannot express my disappointment enough. This site is supposed to bring us closer as a family and toward SK. In the future, make yourselves known is all I'm asking.
For those of you attending future shows, make sure you do this along with supporting Slipknot, Izzy and Starscream by purchasing their merchandise. They truly do appreciate all of the support from the maggots.
Thanks again Jojo, SK ,Izzy,Starscream,Evan and Shane!!!! I appreciated the whole experience and look forward to doing it again in DC on the 17th!!!! If you have the opp to work a show, do so. Peace!!
